Dancing with Nazis

Rammstein – Sonne

Why “Sonne” was made

Rammstein says that the song “Sonne” was made as an entry song for the Ukrainian boxer, Vitali Klitschko, but that Klitschko rejected the song after hearing it, because it was “too hard”, although apparently not as hard as Lewis’ punches.

The fights of Klitschko against north american “Untermenschen” are reminiscent of the fights of Maximilian Schmelling against the American, Joe Lewis, during the Nazi years in the 1930’s. Max Schmelling was supposed to prove the superiority of the German Master Race (Herrenmenschen). Unfortunately, Joe Lewis put the lie to the crackpot “Herrenmensch” theory with a solid punch to the chin.

In the song, Rammstein uses the Sun to represent Klitschko. Could Klitschko have rejected the song, because he realized that Rammstein was trying to draw a rather unpleasant analogy with the Sun-Metaphor?

The Meaning of the Sun to Nazis

The “Swastika” meant “creation” or “sun” in the Nazi pagan religion that some of the Nazi followed, especially in the SS. The symbol below is called the Nazi sun wheel or “Sonnenrad”.

Sonnenrad/Sun Wheel

The symbol of the SS is two S-runes or “Sieg-Runes” as seen in the SS flag shown below. The meaning of the S-rune is also the sun. The Hitler-Youth was a sort of a junior SS and their symbol is a single S rune.

Below is the song book of the Hitler Youth. On the cover is the title of one of the favorite songs of the Hitler youth, “uns geht die Sonne nicht unter” or in English “For us the sun never goes down.”, the “sun” being the Nazi Reich. This motto of the Hitler youth is echoed in this Rammstein song and it is seems apparent in other places that Rammstein likes to compare their fans to the Hitler Youth. That’s why they are called here the Rammstein-Jugend. (Jugend is German for Youth.)

The Video “Sonne”

Having this information about the Nazi sun cult, an interpretation of the Rammstein video, Die Sonne, may come to mind. Just replace “Light” or “Sun” with “Swastika” in the lyrics and see if it makes sense. It appears that Rammstein is trying to make the following identification:

Klitschko=Sun=Swastika=Nazism

Since Klitschko rejected this attempt to identify him as the new Max Schmelling, Rammstein made a video with a non-boxing theme, which seems to be based loosely on characters from Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen. The dwarfs can represent the Nibelungen, who dig wealth from mines with fearful machines. The female may be based partly on Freia, the germanic goddess of youth and beauty, in whose garden grew the golden apples, which gave the gods power and immortality.

Some suggest that the beautiful, but decadent and greedy, gold-dust-snorting, giant represents America. The god-like, beautiful, but cruel, America is oppressing the poor Germans, punishing them unfairly and terribly mistreating them, in general, whilst the Germans are attracted to the beautiful giant in a perverted way. The Germans eventually kill the evil America by using her own decadence against her and are thus able to return to the wonderful freedom of the “Sun” (i.e. the Swastika and Nazism). America is, however, revived somehow, when the apple of youth and immortality falls on her. Perhaps she realizes the Germans have returned to the wonderful light of Nazism? In any case America is revived and the Germans must return to the cruel oppression they were suffering before under America. Aus! (out/over!)

It is a beautiful — if somewhat curious — German fairy tale, however, without the normal Happy Ending.

Rammstein – Sonne / Sun

Rudolf von Sebbottendorf, a early close associate of Hitlers and head of the Thule Society, from whence the NSDAP came, wrote a book entitled “Bevor Hitler kam” (Before Hitler Came) about the origins of the Nazis Movement that was published in the year Hitler took power (1933). On page 15 he says about their rise to power:

The sign of the sun, the Swastika, rises once again from the past; the ancient, good luck symbol of the Aryans has become the emblem of the new Germans. Now the Germans will never forget that every comrade of “das Volk” is blood of his blood, that all Germans are Brothers and sisters, a great holy family.

Lyrics to “Sonne”

Everyone is waiting for the light
fear… have no fear
the sun shines out of my eyes
This night it will not go down
and the world counts loudly to ten
One
Here comes the sun
Two
Here comes the sun
Three
It is the brightest star of all
Four
Here comes the sun
The sun shines from my hands
it can burn, it can dazzle you
when it breaks from the fists
it falls hotly on the face
This night it will not go down
and the world counts loudly to ten
One
Here comes the sun
Two
Here comes the sun
Three
It is the brightest star of all
Four
Here comes the sun
Five
Here comes the sun
Six
Here comes the sun
Seven
It is the brightest star of all
Eight, nine
Here comes the sun

One
Here comes the sun
Two
Here comes the sun
Three
It is the brightest star of all
Four
And will never fall from the sky
Five
Here comes the sun
Six
Here comes the sun
Seven
It is the brightest star of all
Eight, nine
Here comes the sun
Out!
