Dancing with Nazis

Rammstein – Mutter

This can be interpreted as being a song about Germany (Mother) and in particular the guilt-ridden, post-war Germany. The crowd of old children are the generation of WWII. The birthmark that he wants to cut from his head is the guilt of the War and the Holocaust. He is singing again about being out of the light of the “sun”. It seems he can never get enough sun. The Swastika is a symbol for the “sun”. It is the guilt-ridden, post-war mother, “democratic, americanized Germany” that he wants to give an “illness”, kill and make sink into the river.

The bars above his head are correctly proportioned to that the lattice could be made out of Swastikas put together. At 1:20 when he sinks into the river, he is the old, dead democratic Germany and at the same time a baby in the ambiotic fluid representing the new Germany that is yet to be reborn. In the final scene he is poking his finger at a dead crow or jay, which could represent a dead evil spirit (does it represent Nazism or Americanism?).

Rammstein Mutter

English Lyrics for “Rammstein – Mutter”

Mother

The tears of a crowd of old children
I string them on a white hair
I toss the wet chain into the air
and wish that I a mother had

No sun that shined for me
No breast has wept for me
In my throat sticks a tube
Have no navel on my stomach

Mother, Mother
Mother, Mother

I didn’t get a nipple to lick
and no skirt for hiding
no one gave me a name
conceived in haste and without semen

To the mother who never bore me
I have sworn tonight
I will make a sickness a gift to her
and afterwards make her sink into the river

Mother, Mother
Mother, Mother

In her lungs lives an eel
on my forehead, a birthmark
remove it with knife’s kiss
even if I must die from it

Mother… Mother
Mother… MOTHER!!

In her lungs lives an eel
on my forehead, a birthmark
remove it with knife’s kiss
even if I must bleed to death

Mother
Oh, give me strength

Mother, Mother
Oh give me strength

Mother, Mother
Oh give me strength

Mother, Mother
Oh give me strength
