Dancing with Nazis

Rammstein – Reise, Reise

“Reise” means to travel or go on a voyage, which coincidentally is the meaning of the R-rune. A the beginning of this clip you see fans holding an orange flag with the segments of the Rammstein logo separated, which that one may put them back together in another, different symbol (the Swastika)? This is one of the clips where Lindemann Goose-Steps.

The phrase Reise, Reise in old maritime jargon, though, is said to mean “to get up from a sleep”. So, it has be compared to the Nazi slogan “Ewache, Erwache” as in the song “Deutschland Erwache” below.

Deutschland erwache!

Deutschland erwache aus deinem bösen Traum!

Gib fremden Juden in deinem Reich nicht Raum!
Wir wollen kämpfen für dein Auferstehn!
Arisches Blut soll nicht untergehn!
Wir wollen kämpfen für dein Auferstehn!
Arisches Blut soll nicht untergehn!
Translation:

Germany awake from this horrible nightmare!
Give in your lands no room for the Jews.
We want to fight for your resurgence!
Aryan blood should not perish!
We want to fight for your resurgence!
Aryan blood should not perish!

Reise, Reise Lyrics

Unofficial Translation ©2004 Jeremy Williams.

Even on the waves there is fighting
Where fish and flesh are woven into sea
One stabs the lance while in the army
Another throws it into the ocean

Ahoy

Arise, arise seaman arise
Each does it in his own way
One thrusts the spear into a man
Another then into the fish

Arise, arise seaman arise
And the waves cry softly
In their blood a spear is lodged
They bleed softly into the ocean

The lance must be drowned in flesh
Fish and man sink to the depths
Where the black soul dwells
there is no light on the horizon

Ahoy

Arise, arise seaman arise
Each does it in his own way
One thrusts the spear into a man
Another then into the fish

Arise, arise seaman arise
And the waves cry softly
In their blood a spear is lodged
They bleed softly into the ocean

Arise, arise seaman arise
And the waves cry softly
In their heart a spear is lodged
They bleed themselves dry on the shore

[1] Though written as a noun, “Reise” is obviously used as a verb in the song. The phrase “Reise, Reise” is used by seamen as a wake-up call and finds its roots in the Middle High German verb “risen”, which meant “to rise” (to which it is obviously related as well). This verb has since died out in New High German, though the noun was retained and came to mean “journey” or “voyage”. The verb “reisen” was re-derived from the noun “Reise”, but now means “to journey” or “to travel”. It seems the old meaning has been preserved in this phrase in the seaman’s language.

========

This song “Reise, Reise” is highly symbolic and one wonders what it may symbolize, if anything. The spear/lance is a prominent symbol in this song, appearing in every verse. The reference to “one may thrust the spear in men and the other in fish”, suggests a reference to Jesus, who admonished his disciples to be “fishers of men and not of fish”. There are also references of the lance having to be drowned in flesh, to blood and being bled dry and bleeding in the sea and blood mixing with water.

The Spear of Destiny
The Spear of Destiny

There is a spear/lance that is important to Nazis and that is the Spear of Destiny (also called the Spear of Longinus or the Holy Spear). The Spear of Destiny is also mentioned in the Book of St. John in the Bible.

John 19:34 – But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

This was the spear that was thrust into the flesh of Christ to make sure that he was dead. The Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire (the 1st Reich) had a relic spear that they claimed was this Spear of Destiny and that supposedly gave its possessor great mystical powers. One of the greatest German Emperors Frederick Barbarossa especially credited his many military victories to possession of the Spear of Destiny. Hitler was a great admirer of Barbarossa (remember Operation Barbarossa). Hitler also had possession of the Spear of Destiny and reportedly believed in it’s mystical power. For this reason the Spear is said to be valued by today’s Nazis. The spear is today on display in the Hofburg in Vienna with the other Kleinödien (Crown Jewels) of the Holy Roman Empire. Here you can read more about the Spear of Destiny. This is an article on Hitler and the Spear of Destiny.
